MINDFULNESS IN THE COMMUNITY

I have worked with SAFE (Suicide Aware For Everyone) in Glanmire where I ran Mindfulness/personal development workshops over 18 months which were offered to the Adults in the Glanmire Community.

I have taught teens in exam years in secondary schools such as Glanmire Community College and Glanmire Gael Colasite The techniques I used were Mindfulness, meditation and coping skills they can use both in school and in their every day life.

I ran a Wellbeing day in Upper Glanmire National School, over a period of 1 week where all children in each class where introduced to Mindfulness, Chill Skills and personal development tools as part of their Health Week.

We cultivate the attitude that the breath & body is our anchor that we can return to at any stage we are faced with events, feelings and emotions that are uncomfortable to us. We do not judge or criticise ourselves in anyway as this just puts up barriers. Once we become aware of the content of our thoughts we can be more discerning and are far less likely to get caught up in negative thinking or ruminating. The added benefit of this type of training is that it allows us to experience the joy in our lives much more fully. Cultivating mindfulness can also change our experience of activities in our lives that we may label as mundane/boring. Learning to meditate can have an effect on our perception of events and we may find ourselves in a state of awe and wonder at things that simply went unnoticed before.
